Growth pets gain EXP and grow, join combat alongside their master, change appearance at certain levels and can be summoned for an unlimited time. In return they may die from damage or hunger. The growth pet types in the official guide:

A symbol that represents the kings of the Eastern Tribes who fulfill the will of Heaven and acts as the ruler of the earth, this creature is an object of worship and subject of folk religion.
	Penguin Summon Scroll	Penguin	Not indigenous to this continent, it is construed that these penguins have travelled from the frigid south on an iceberg. Contrary to their small stature and cute outer appearance, they are quite aggressive and strong, giving rise to the rumor that, when these creatures first appeared on this continent, they immediately overtook the surrounding regions by force.
